Niall Oldman appears in the novel The Legacy of Merlin as the love-interest of Phoebe and an innocent to be saved.

Description

He looked about her own age with long black hair pulled back in a ponytail and black leather pants... those pants clung to his long, muscular thighs and the way he moved, with a certain catlike grace.

Phoebe Halliwell (Chapter 1)

Background

Phoebe first came across him in a bookstore called Caer Wydyr. When she touched him, she had a premonition of Niall holding a baby in a windswept heath. She then asked him for a date which he accepted. On the date, he began telling Phoebe about Arthurian legends, facts such as that King Arthur could not ride a horse and that Merlin was in fact the most powerful Druid of all time. They then began going out on dates regularly but Prue had Darryl dig information on him, but they found no records in his name.

It is around this time that Piper caught him in the middle of a Druid ceremony with his friend, Diana. When they interrogated him, he revealed that he was in fact the son of the Druid Merlin and Nifein, the Enchantress, two of the most powerful sorcerers of all time. He was brought into the future from the year 584 by Diana with the help of two standing stones and her little band of so-called Druids to perform a fertility ritual called Beltane. He was raised at Caer Annyl on the coast by a noble family close to King Arthur.

It is revealed through Diana's researches that Niall was married and had four daughters. His oldest daughter, Gwyneth, married the local lord, Rhys of Penarth, the son of Niall's foster brother Idris. They had two sons. One of them died when he was nine years old and the other entered a monastery in the year 617. It is also revealed that Lady Mary, the wife of Sir Charles, was his descendant and she was a witch.
