Josh is a graduate student in Architectural history at Berkeley, where he’s a GA for Professor Whittlesey, who has studied the Halliwell Manor. Josh and Piper “meet cute” by fighting over the last bottle of Calera Jensen ’93 in a local wine store. Josh turns out to be the final dinner guest in a meal Piper is cooking for Prue’s boss, Claire Pryce, and potential Bucklands’ client Professor Whittlesey. There’s an attraction between Josh and Piper, which Piper tries to deny, despite her sister Phoebe’s prodding, because she’s afraid of getting hurt again.

Thanks to Phoebe’s interference, Piper agrees to go on a rock-climbing date with Josh, but when they almost kiss, she uses her powers to freeze him, and then finds a reason to quickly leave the date. She decides to overcome her fears and see him again, but after three dates, she struggles with whether she should take the relationship to the next level. Josh tells Piper he’s been offered a job in Beverly Hills, but if she wants him to stay in San Francisco, he will. This helps Piper realize she’s not yet over her ex-boyfriend, Leo, and she urges Josh to take the job, effectively ending their relationship.
